For most men, one side hangs lower. That used to be a hunch. Now it's the largest dataset ever collected.

6,544 men, Kinsey Institute: most hang left — of the ones who lean, four to one. Physicians measuring newborns found the same side. Ancient sculptors carved it. A 1947 patent says trousers are "always cut for dress to the left," and Savile Row still cuts them that way. The category sells "support" and "separation" — geometry for a body that doesn't exist. We built for the body that does.

  1. 1938–1963

    The dataset

    The Kinsey Institute interviews 6,544 men and asks, among other things, which way it hangs. Nobody publishes the answer for fifty years.

  2. 1947

    The patent

    A US patent for a men's support garment notes that trousers "are always cut for dress to the left side." The tailors knew.

  3. 1960

    The examination

    Anatomists in Hong Kong examine 486 men: in most of them, the left testicle hangs lower. Underwear does not get the memo.

  4. 1976

    The statues

    Chris McManus surveys 107 classical sculptures in Italian museums: left side carved lower, two times out of three. Nature prints it.

  5. 1997

    The numbers land

    Bogaert publishes the Kinsey analysis: most men hang left. Of those who lean, four to one.

  6. 2002

    Science laughs, then thinks

    The statue survey wins the Ig Nobel Prize in Medicine.

  7. 2019

    The left side runs warmer

    A second Ig Nobel, in Anatomy, for measuring that the left side of the scrotum is warmer than the right. Postal workers were involved.

  8. 2026

    The pouch moves

    Lefty's builds the chamber to hang left. The last garment finally catches up.
